Building Control Regulations
| Part L of the Building regulations deals with the conservation of energy in our homes. The thermal efficiency is measured as a U-value, the lower the U-value the better the thermal properties of the product in question. Typically a half glazed door has a U-value of 1.6 W/m2 K. A solid core door (unglazed) typically has a U-value of 0.94 W/m2 K. This appropriately demonstrates that a worst case scenario (half glazed) door meets/exceeds the Part L requirement for thermal efficiency, and that the glass is the limiting factor. Part L also concerns itself with sound insulation but there is currently no standard set for front entrance doors. |
